Phase 2 Students

Welcome to Phase 2. Your third and fourth years see you step further into the clinical environment and your timetables will allow you to spend at least 3 out of 5 days in the hospital. Here, you will have the opportunity to see a variety of health professionals at work in the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients. However, you yourselves should start to see patients on a regular and independent basis with the aim to refine your history taking and physical examinations, building on the skills you learnt in Phase 1.

In so doing you must continue to relate the knowledge that you are acquiring in biomedical, social and behavioural sciences to the clinical problems you see, in order that you fully appreciate the importance of understanding the scientific basis of the presenting problems you come across. Your ability to discuss the underlying rationale of a diagnosis and relevant treatment options will be thoroughly tested by the assignments you are required to write in Phase 2.

Health Maintenance 3 consists of 8 common clinical presentations which form the themes around which a week’s worth of activities are built. You will be assigned a Course Tutor at the start of the term with whom you will have twice weekly case presentation tutorials.

In Ageing and Endings you will be attached to the Medical Oncology team for 4 weeks followed by 4 weeks of Geriatric Medicine. Each has a timetable of activities for you.
