Assessment
Welcome to the beginning of your clinical learning experiences. During phase 1, you’ll attend the hospital every alternate week to develop skills in communicating and examining patients. You'll have the chance to practice these skills before interacting with real patients in the clinical environment. Your visits to the wards will give you insight into the nature of medical practice in a major hospital.
You will also be able to relate the knowledge that you are acquiring in biomedical sciences (including anatomy, biochemistry and physiology) and in social and behavioural sciences to clinical problems.
1st year students begin with the Foundations course in teaching period 1. This will introduce you to basic concepts of the medical history and physical examination.
2nd year students continue developing their clinical skills in the Ageing & Endings course in teaching period 1. This course will focus on the clinical assessment of the elderly and the neurological system.
In the second teaching period, the groups will be reformed with 1st and 2nd year students working together as with your other learning activities on campus. This will also mean changing clinical tutors for many students.

Assessment
Your tutor will provide you with a written assessment on your progress during the year in the Health Maintenance course. This is not a formal examination. It will give you feedback on how you are doing and will be useful for you when preparing your phase 1 portfolio.
