Congratulations to new Associate Professors
The staff and students of the Prince of Wales Clinical School congratulate Dr Jason Wong, Lowy Cancer Research Centre, and Dr James McAuley, NeuRA, on their promotions to Associate Professor. These changes will take effect from 1 January 2018.

SESLHD Staff Awarded Medical Research Scholarships
Three SESLHD staff are amongst 26 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates statewide, recently awarded a PhD scholarship for trailblazing health projects. The scholarships are part of a $1.5 million NSW Government program to advance the careers of early stage researchers in health and medical research. |
Ovarian tumour research among studies funded by NSW Health scholarships
An analysis of mucinous ovarian cancers is among the successful studies awarded in the inaugural round of the NSW Health PhD Scholarships Program.
Four UNSW PhD candidates won funding for the scholarships announced by NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard, matched by the host universities or partner organisations.

UNSW celebrates its star graduates
Fifth-year medical student Beryl Lin was recognised in the awards’ only graduand category, Student Volunteering. Beryl has volunteered hundreds of hours as a peer teacher, convened state leadership conferences, and run mentoring programs. As a Medicine Faculty Board member, she is active in improving teaching, learning, and assessment processes.
World-first implantation of 3D-printed vertebrae takes place in Australia
Ralph Mobbs, a neurosurgeon from the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, Australia, has replaced two cancerous vertebrae with 3D-printed implants, according to a report from the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC). The world-first surgery took approximately 15 hours, and involved the separation and re-attachment of the patient’s skull from his spinal tissue.
Streamlined education gives women confidence and support on breast cancer genetic testing
A new streamlined model of offering genetic testing to younger women newly diagnosed with breast cancer has shown promising results, and could become more important as the tests become more widely used.
