Project main description:

Haematopoiesis has served as a model process for studying stem cell biology and multiple transcription factors (gene products that regulate other genes) have been identified as key regulators of the formation and subsequent differentiation of haematopoietic stem cells. However nothing is known about either the hierarchical organization of mesenchymal stem cells (progenitors of bone and cartilage) or the transcription factors that regulate their formation and differentiation. Using a combination of primary stem cells and engineered mouse embryonic stem cells, and employing state of art micro-array and transgenic technologies, I aim to probe the transcriptional network that regulates the identity of embryonic and tissue specific stem cells.
