Welcome to Postgraduate Students

Welcome Students!

UNSW Medicine provides an excellent opportunity for students to undertake either a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Medicine, Surgery or Science (MSc) through the Prince of Wales Clinical School (POWCL). The School extends across the PoW Hospital campus and the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, at the nearby UNSW Kensington Campus, providing excellent venues for undertaking a higher degree in a range of clinical disciplines.  POWCL is a node of the Health Science Alliance (HSA), a partnership which brings together multiple universities, teaching hospitals and medical research institutes in NSW. The vision of the HSA is to be recognised nationally and internationally as providing the best possible healthcare informed by cutting-edge research activity translated rapidly into the clinical setting and that both these will be provided by a world-class team of healthcare providers and medical researchers.

A higher degree that has a substantial clinical interface can best be undertaken in an atmosphere where there is access to top quality clinicians and scientists who work in a collaborative manner advancing and innovating in health and disease. POWCS provides for that vibrant and dynamic environment with over 300 active clinicians participating in research and education. Our research supervisors have outstanding international reputations and work in a wide range of areas including adult cancer, surgical oncology, nephrology, neuroscience, dementia and translational research. Collaborations and interdisciplinary interactions are a hallmark.

Our Hospital campus is 2 km from Coogee beach and 3 km east from the central business district and there is a great café culture in the Randwick village precinct. The Lowy Cancer Research Centre is on the UNSW Kensington campus, only a 7 minute walk. Randwick shopping starts just across the road from the POW Hospital, with a wide variety of shops, cafes and services, and Coogee Beach is tantalisingly close - only a 5 minute bus ride or leisurely downhill stroll.

On behalf of the Prince of Wales Clinical School, I hope you have an enjoyable and productive time in your postgraduate research here.

Best wishes,

Associate Professor Kerrie McDonald and Dr Jonathan Erlich
