P3: Surgical
Refer to eMed for Placements and Tutorial Times.
Prince of Wales Hospital has a great tradition of surgical teaching. Students undertake attachments to surgical teams in both Phase 2 and Phase 3. During these attachments you will be seen as part of the surgical team and will have the opportunity to attend ward rounds, outpatients clinics and theatres. You will be expected to clerk patients, and read up around the surgical conditions your patients are affected by.
The course is delivered over 4 teaching periods, each of 8 weeks. At the beginning of each term, you will be assigned to a surgical unit. Students will have one four week rotation with a general or vascular surgical unit and one rotation with a sub-specialty unit. Please contact the registrar attached to each unit at the start of each rotation to arrange a meeting. You are expected to become a junior member of the surgical team. The aim of the unit attachments is to provide an opportunity to be involved in patient management, particularly pre-operative and post-operative care. The clinical responsibilities and activities are a vital part of the program. This includes clerking of patients and assessment by case presentations during ward rounds and informal discussions. You are welcome and encouraged to attend operations at any time. There is a core surgical program which students are expected to attend and they include general surgical, anaesthetic, perioperative and orthopaedic tutorials, as well as bedside teaching. The final mark for the Surgery course is based on the supervisor’s overall grade of the generic learning plan, oral case presentation, and observed clinical assessments. For final year students, weekly surgical viva tutorials are offered in Teaching Period 2 & 3.
